marble
From: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition  |  Date: 2008

marble metamorphic rock composed wholly or in large part of calcite  crystals, the crystalline texture being the result of metamorphism of limestone by heat and pressure. The term marble is loosely applied to any limestone or dolomite that takes a good polish and is otherwise suitable as a building stone or ornamental stone. Marbles range in color from snow-white to gray and black, many varieties being some shade of red, yellow, pink, green, or buff; the colors, which are caused by the presence of impurities, are frequently arranged in bands or patches and add to the beauty of the stone when it is cut and polished. Marble is used as a material in statuary and monuments, as a facing stone in buildings and residences, and for pillars, colonnades, paneling, wainscoting, and floor tiles. Like all limestone's, it is corroded by water and acid fumes and is thus ultimately an uneconomical material for use in exposed places and in large cities. The presence of certain impurities decreases its durability. Marble was extensively used by the ancient Greeks; the Parthenon and other famous buildings were constructed of white Pentelic marble from Mt. Pentelicus in Attica, and the finest statues, e.g., the Venus de' Medici, from the remarkably lustrous Parian marble from Paros in the Cyclades. These same quarries were later used by the Romans. Among the famous marbles of Italy are the Carrara and Siena marbles of Tuscany, which were used by the Romans and the Italian sculptors of the Renaissance. Marbles are quarried in all parts of the world. The finest marbles in the United States come from Vermont, which produces large quantities. Other states important as marble producers are Massachusetts, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, California, Colorado, and Arizona.

Advantages of Natural Stone(Per Arizonatile.com)
#

AFFORDABILITY: When assessing the affordability of natural stone, consider durability, lifespan, uniqueness and timeless quality. These characteristics make it clear that natural stone is very affordable.

AVAILABILITY: Arizona Tile stocks slabs in nearly 250 varieties including marble, granite, limestone, slate, travertine, onyx, quartzite, and tumbled stone.

CARE & MAINTENANCE: Natural stone, when properly sealed, is simple to care for and maintain. Keep your natural stone looking its best by sweeping, dust-mopping or vacuuming prior to wet-mopping with a pH-balanced neutral cleaner or warm water.

COLOR: In recent years, more new stones have been brought to the marketplace than ever before. Granite tiles and slabs cover the spectrum from near-white to rich greens, absolute blacks, and even blues. With the warm tones of travertine and limestone, and varied beauty of marble, the possibilities are almost endless. Remember that stone is a product of nature, and color varies from piece to piece, as well as between lots. Your stone should be viewed and approved before installation.

POPULARITY: Due to all of the above-mentioned factors, natural stone is very popular. Unlike synthetic floor coverings and counter surfaces, natural stone is unique, highly durable and has a timeless quality that never goes out of style.

SIZE VARIATION: Natural stone is available primarily in tiles and slabs. Many natural stone tiles are available in different sizes, allowing flexibility in design and patterning. Granite and marble slabs can be fabricated and tailored to meet the needs of home-builders, designers and architects. The only limit to the use of natural stone is your imagination.

Marble Tiles & Slabs

Manufacturer/Importer: Bedrosians

While Ceramic Tile is a man-made product, Marble, Granite, Slate, Limestone and Quartzite are natural products made by Mother Nature. Marble has been used for centuries to grace the most lavish buildings in the world. Today, in the United States, Marble is gaining popularity as a residential as well as a commercial finish material.
What is Marble?

There are 3 types of rock on the Earth's surface:

1) Layered Rock which is Sedimentary in character

2) Changed Rock which is Metamorphic in character, and

3) Volcanic Rock which is Igneous in character

Marble is of the first two types.
Dolomitic Marble

Dolomitic Marble is layered (or sedimentary) in character and contains a mineral called "Dolomite." This type of marble is created from Limestone through the actions of pressure, heat and various minerals that pass or percolate through the rock during formation. There are 3 major groups of Dolomitic Marble:

1) Travertines (from salt-water Limestone)

2) Serpentines (from fresh-water Limestone), and

3) Onyxs

Dolomitic marble comes from the quarrier in the following sizes and shapes:

Slab: (2-3 cm thick - standard) 3'x6' to 7'x10' (Avg: 4'x8')

Tile: (3/8" to 3/4" thick) 6"x6" to 24"x24" (Standard: 12"x12")

WARNING: All Dolomitic marbles are highly porous and very susceptible to weathering, thus, they should not be used for exterior applications which expose the stone to extreme weather conditions.

Dolomitic marble is available from the quarrier in two basic finishes:

Polished (Voids filled or unfilled), and

Honed (Satin Finish)
Calcinate Marble

Calcinate Marble is changed (or metamorphic) in character and is created from Limestone through pressure and extreme heat. It is composed primarily of the mineral "Calcite." Calcinate Marble is harder and more durable than Dolomitic Marble.

Calcinate Marble:

Ranges in color from pure white to white or grey

Has veins of differing colors caused by mineral impurities

Sparkles like diamonds because of the light bouncing off of the large Calcite crystals

Calcinate marble comes in the following sizes and shapes:

Slab: (3/4" to 1" thick) 3'x6' to 7'x10' (Avg 4'x8')

Tile: (3/8" to 3/4" thick) 6"x6" to 24"x24" (Avg 12"x12")

Like Dolomitic Marbles, all Calcinate Marbles are available in two basic finishes:

Polished, and

Honed (Satin Finish)

Calcinate marble is excellent for exterior applications or as an interior finish material. Specific uses are:

Exterior wall claddings

Interior walls

Interior floors

Bathroom vanities

Counter tops (except Kitchens)

Tables

Furniture

Granite Tiles & Slabs

Manufacturer/Importer: Bedrosians

Granite is volcanic (or Igneous) rock. When molten material from the Earth's core called "magma" comes up to just beneath the Earth's surface and cools, it becomes Granite. Granite is very hard and extremely durable. It has a very grainy structure and can be polished well. This type of stone comes in a variety of colors ranging from salt and pepper to reddish brown to jet black.

Granite comes from the quarry in the following sizes:

Slab: (3/4" to 1" thick) 3'x6' to 7'x10' (Avg 4'x8')

Tile: (3/8" to 3/4" thick) 6"x6" to 24"x24" (Avg 12"x12")

Granite is available in several finishes including:

Polished

Honed (Rough Finish - Special Order)

Flame Textured (Rough Finish - Normally Special Order)

Granite has many applications, including:

Interior & exterior wall veneers

Kitchen and bar counter tops

Bathroom vanity counter tops

Furniture tops

Tables and desks

Interior & exterior floors
 Slate Tiles

Manufacturer/Importer/Distributor: Bedrosians

Slate is a shale-type stone, having a straight cleavage. It is sedimentary in its origin often formed by a consolidation of volcanic ash. Colors range from black, grey & green to reddish brown.

Slate is available in the following sizes:

12"x12" 12"x12" Guaged - USA 18"x18"

Slate is a durable stone which is used primarily for:

Interior Floors

Exterior Floors
Limestone

Manufacturer/Importer/Distributor: Bedrosians

Limestone is a layered (or Sedimentary) rock. Primarily composed of calcium (from seashells), it is the original rock from which marble is created.

Limestone is available in the following forms and sizes:

Tiles: 16"x16" & 18"x18" (Standard)

Slabs: (2 -3 cm thick - standard) 3'x6' to 7'x10' (Avg: 4'x8')

Limestone is fairly soft, yet it is used in many ways. Some of its applications are:

Exterior floors*

Interior floors*

Exterior walls

Interior accent walls

Planter & fountain cladding s

* Not recommended for use in areas where the possibility of staining or spilling of grease exists

Quartzite

Manufacturer/Importer/Distributor: Bedrosians

Sandstone was used as the main building material for all the monuments of ancient Eqypt.  Today it is used primarily for:

Exterior Building Claddings

Interior Wall Treatments

Interior Floors (where staining from grease or oil is not likely)
Natural Stone Tiles(Per Home Depot)

Tiles made from natural stone are the second major category of traditional floor tiles. Not all stones are suitable for flooring or easily cut into tiles. Three types of stone tiles are common:
     Marble

   Granite

       Slate

Surface Finishes

Marble, granite and slate tiles are usually available in two different surface textures or finishes: polished and honed.

Polished Finish

        Shiny and sleek looking
         Slippery when wet

Honed Finish

       Dull or matte texture
        Less slippery than polished surfaces

Other Finishes

Marble is also available with a tumbled finish, giving it an antique, rustic appearance.

Granite is also available with a flamed finish, created by exposing the stone's surface to extreme heat. The rough and deep texture of flame finishes gives these granite tiles a dramatic appearance, plus great traction for outdoor use.

Slate tile's top surface is naturally cleft, providing good traction. Its smoother under-surface makes installation easier.

Marble Tile

Quarried natural marble brings beauty and elegance to any room.
       Timeless and classic
Suitable for interior walls, moderate-traffic floors and exterior cladding in nonfreezing areas

Cost - Starts low; custom orders can be expensive
Granite Tile

Granite is an igneous rock formed by volcanic action.

Flecks of quartz, feldspar and mica give each tile a special character

Choice of polished, honed or flamed surfaces

Recommended for interior and exterior walls and heavy-duty interior floors

Polished finish not recommended for exterior or interior floors that attract a lot of water or grease

Durability - Properly installed granite tile floors last virtually forever
Water Absorption - Varies by stone and by type. Some are very dense and stain-resistant.
Maintenance - Dust mop regularly; damp mop with mild, pH-neutral stone cleaner
Cost - Starts low; custom orders can be expensive
 Slate Tile

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock with a subtle, natural beauty.

         Resists fading, abrasion and chemicals

         Impervious to freeze/thaw cycles

Highly durable; expect a beautiful appearance for many years

         Extremely porous; requires regular sealing

Recommended for both interior and exterior floor, wall and specialty uses, such as stair treads, tabletops and cladding

Not recommended for exterior or interior floors that attract a lot of water or grease

Durability - Properly installed slate tile floors last virtually forever
Water Absorption - Varies by stone
Maintenance - Dust mop regularly; damp mop with mild, pH-neutral stone cleaner
Cost - Starts low, at $2 per square foot; custom orders can be expensive

Types
Unfilled: Travertine with naturally occurring holes.
Filled: Travertine with its naturally occurring holes filled with a mixture of a hardener and dust obtained from the cutting and honing process.
Polished: During production, a facet is put on each crystal at a microscopic level much as a jeweler would facet a diamond. The resultant smooth surface allows light to refract in and out of the stone in a parallel way. This enhances the visible sheen and gives the appearance of depth.
Honed: A smooth, non-reflective finish achieved by grinding the surface.
Saw Cut: The untreated surface of a stone when it is first cut. The surface is slightly rough
Tumbled (ancient stones): An antique look achieved by rounded corners and edges.

Special Considerations
Color variations are common and enhance the natural beauty of travertine. Be sure to inspect multiple samples of the stone before selection to ensure satisfaction with colors and patterns.

Polished: During production, a facet is put on each crystal at a microscopic level much as a jeweler would facet a diamond. The resultant smooth surface allows light to refract in and out of the stone in a parallel way. This enhances the visible sheen and gives the appearance of depth and luster.
Honed: Grinding the surface achieves a smooth, non-reflective finish.

Tumbled Surface (ancient stones): An antique look achieved by subjecting the stone to a tumbling process.

Special Considerations
Consider the function of the area involved prior to selection. Marbles range from 5-7.5 on the MOHS hardness scale. (Compare this with granite stones used for landscaping, which range from 8-9 on the MOHS scale).
Green and black colored marbles require a 100% solid epoxy adhesive as they have a tendency to warp from water-based adhesives.
Color variations are common and enhance the natural beauty of marble. Be sure to inspect multiple samples of the stone before selection to ensure satisfaction with colors and patterns.

Marble is back ... in almost every room.
From: Sunset  |  Date: 10/1/1984

\Marble is back . . . in almost every room

A classic building material conjuring images of ancient Athens and Rome, marble is enjoying a modern renaissance. As more homeowners are discovering, its richness, durability, and range of color can enhance almost any room.

The examples here--in kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, even outdoors--demonstrate just how versatile it is. But cost and maintenance must be taken into account. Our report can help you decide if marble is the right material for you.

The stone that sparkles

The word marble comes from the Greek marmaros, meaning sparkling stone. Marble is metamorphic rock, formed chiefly from limestone or dolomite. The presence of numerous minerals and fossils accounts for the distinctive veins and dazzling colors of many marbles (see the large photograph on page 105).

Italy alone boasts at least 38 major quarrying centers. Other countries that export marble include Belgium, France, Norway, Brazil, Mexico, and Taiwan. In the United States, Georgia, Vermont, Tennessee, Idaho, and New Mexico are among the states with active quarries. (Quarries in California and Colorado aren't active.)

Certain types are famous: Italy's white, sculpture-quality Carrara, the rose-colored stone of Norway, the black marble of Belgium, and the white Colorado marble used in the Lincoln Memorial.

And serious candy makers know marble's ability to absorb heat rapidly, allowing the quick cooling and easy working of chocolate, fondants, and taffy.

Shopping for marble

A visit to a marble yard can be like entering Ali Baba's cave: a treasury of stone in lustrous colors surrounds you. Standing beside 6- by 10-foot, 900-pound slabs of polished, 400-million-year-old stone helps you appreciate why marble has captured the imaginations of artisans and builders throughout history.

To find a dealer, look in the yellow pages under Marble--Natural. (You may also see Marble--Cultured. So-called cultured marble is a synthetic product made of polyester resin and dolomite dust.)

You should see the stone first, because different companies use different names for essentially the same stone. Even if the marble comes from the same quarry, color and markings vary.

Take project dimensions along so you and your dealer can accurately estimate how much you'll need.

Some building supply stores and tile shops carry marble tiles. Sometimes you can find recycled marble at salvage yards (a marble yard can repolish and recut older, worn pieces to look like new).

If you're looking for a small piece, say for a tabletop, try to find an odd-lot fragment that comes close in size and shape to your needs, then design around it. Generally, you can buy a less-expensive piece and save costly extra cuts. Don't overlook "vanity cutouts'--oval, round, and sometimes polygonal pieces left over after holes for sinks have been cut in counter slabs. We show an octagonal one on page 105.

Tiles, slabs, and reinforced sheets

Although blocks are sold for sculptural and architectural use, your basic choices in finished materials are tiles and slabs or panels.

Tiles, typically 1/2 inch thick, come in three basic sizes: 6 inches square, 6 by 12 inches, and 12 inches square. You'll find slabs in a large variety of sizes, but the full slab is usually about 6 by 10 feet and 3/4 inch thick. You can figure that such a slab will weigh at least 15 pounds per square foot, tiles about 5 pounds per square foot.

Recent breakthroughs have made it possible to produce lighter-weight sheets. For these, marble is sliced 1/4 inch thick and reinforced with a backing of epoxy and fiberglass, then cut into three sizes: 1 by 2 feet, 2 by 2 feet, and 2 by 4 feet. Several companies now market this product; cost for travertine, for example, can run around $23.50 per square foot for a 2 by 4-foot sheet.

Finishes and edges

There are two basic types of finishes: polished and honed. Polished marble has a glassy, reflective surface and shows off the stone's color and veining. It's traditionally used for tiles and furniture.

Professional polishing is done with a special powder and a high-speed electric polisher. (You can do touch-up work yourself: wet the surface with water, sprinkle on polishing powder available from a marble dealer, then buff the powder onto the marble with a cloth or a buffing pad on a low-speed power drill. Do not use sandpaper.)

Honed marble has been partially sanded, producing a rougher surface with relatively little light reflection. It's usually used for floors or other areas where a polished surface might be too slippery, particularly when wet. If you'll be walking on marble in a bathroom or by a pool, buy the honed surface and exercise caution.

The surface of some types, such as travertine, contains small holes. These are often filled by the dealer using Portland cement colored to match the rest of the slab, or clear epoxy.

There are three basic types of edges. Simplest and least expensive is an arris edge, which means that the sharp top corners resulting from the cuts have been sanded down. The bull-nose edge is half-rounded. The ogee edge has a slightly more complex S-curve profile.

Like all limestones, it is corroded by water and acid fumes and is thus ultimately an uneconomical material for use in exposed places and in large cities.

Granite and marble slabs can be fabricated and tailored to meet the needs of homebuilders, designers and architects. The only limit to the use of natural stone is your imagination.

Not recommended for areas that attract a lot of water or grease

Durability - Properly installed marble tile floors last virtually forever
Water Absorption - Porous; stains easily
Maintenance - Dust mop regularly; damp mop with mild, pH-neutral stone cleaner
Cost - Starts low; custom orders can be expensive

Travertine(Per Emser.com)

Natural stone is a product of nature. No two tiles are exactly alike. Emser Tile recommends that a customer not purchase a tile based on the photo on this website. A customer should request a sample of the tile from their sales representative prior to making a final decision. Furthermore, Emser Tile requires that a customer inspects the purchased material prior to installation to check color, veining, thickness, sizing, and finish. Please ask for information on pre-sealing, sealing, and ongoing maintenance.
