Tile Installation Methods
The following installation methods presented in diagramatic form are an overview of some of the accepted industry standards. They represent, however, only a small portion of the possible methods of ceramic tile installation. Every locale has its own requirements and practices and the details presented here are indicative of installation methods common in the western United States.
The details in this section have been gleaned from the 2001 Handbook For Ceramic Tile Installation (39th Edition) with permission from the Tile Council of America, Inc., the publisher. This newest handbook contains complete and comprehensive details as well as written explanations on required materials, etc. Personal copies may be ordered by contacting the TCA by phone at: (864) 646-8453, by fax at: (864) 646-2821, by email at: literature@tileusa.com or by writing to the Tile Council of America, Inc., 100 Clemson Research Blvd., Anderson, SC 29625. For price, shipping and handling, check out the TCA, Inc. web site linked below.
Each detail is described by: 1) Application (e.g. Floors, Walls, Counters, etc.), 2) Location (e.g. Interior or Exterior), 3) Sub Base Construction Material (e.g. Wood, Concrete, Masonry, etc.), 4) Setting Base Material, if any is applied (e.g. Cement Mortar, Cement Backer Board, etc.) and Tile Setting Adhesive and Bonding Material (e.g. Dry (Thin) Set, Mastic, Latex-Cement Mortar, etc.).
